Help and F.A.Q.
Very instructive video by “KNK USA” on how Templatemaker.nl works and on importing files into Make The Cut
Frequently Asked Questions
I printed a template and now it’s the wrong size!
Most likely, you didn’t set scaling to none or 100% in the printer’s options.
When using Silhouete (Designer Edition), the size should be fine using a SVG Image at 90dpi.
When using Adobe software, choose “PDF” as the file format.
When using CAD software, you can choose the DXF fileformat. Set 1 unit equal to the same unit you chose for your dimensions (either mm, cm or inch).
Can I use your templates on my Silhouette Cutter?
Yes: choose the SVG option from the more options page and download the template as SVG
However, you'll need to buy the more expensive designer edition of Silhouette Studio to be able to import SVG files. Silhoutte also sells a plugin for CorelDraw and Illustrator.
You will need to un-group the template, or the text will get cut out as well.
Or,… see the next question:
I have Silhouette Studio, but not the Designer edition. Can I still use your templates?
Yes, but it's a bit experimental. You can choose DXF option from the more options page and save and open the template in Silhouette. You need to scale the template to the size that’s displayed on it.
See next question as well:
Can I use the downloaded templates commercially?
That’s very nice of you to ask. Yes, you can! However, you may not publish them again, not even for free, without my written permission. Please, refer to licence: http://www.templatemaker.nl/license.php
Can I get the software you use?
I wrote the software myself in PHP. I don't sell it. Or you would have to pay me really well. I mean: really well!
Your templates are too large for my printer!
Well, there isn’t much I can do about that, after all, the dimensions are custom!
But there are a couple of things you can do about it:
- Use a smaller margin
- Use the multi-sheet-box template if you want to create a box assembled from 6 separate sheets
- Use smaller glue and dust tabs
- Enlarge the template on a copy-machine
- Choose the draw construction lines option and re-create the template by hand
PDF’s do not print well
Try to save the PDF to your desktop first, and then open it using Adobe Acrobat Reader or MacOSX Preview. Sometimes, that works better then printing straight from the browser.
Why don’t your templates just fit on an A4 or on a US-Letter size sheet?
Because their dimensions are custom and I can't predict if the user (you!) wants an A4 or a US-Letter or a borderless A3. Therefore, I create a sheet with the smallest possible dimensions and let the user decide how it will best fit on their printing device.
Besides that, if I'd make the page exactly A4, you would still have to fiddle around with settings in the printer‘s options, otherwise it will apply a margin of it‘s own and then scale our A4 so it fits in
What is this DXF option and how does it work?
DXF is a file format for technical drawings. People who know AutoCad and technical drawing programs should know how to deal with them. Silhouette Studio can open DXF files, but it messes things up a bit. This is what to do:
- Open the DXF in Silhouette
- Right-click on the template and choose ‘release compound paths’
- Choose what lines should be cut and what lines should be folded
- If you want to have accurate measures, select an ‘island’, group it and scale it to the dimensions written under it.
Other programs then Silhouette respect the layers and allow us to convert between DXF-units and real-world-units. Silhouette Studio doesn’t and this causes all the trouble.
DXF files can be used in QCad, AutoCad, Illustrator, Inkscape and many other CAD-like programs.
QCad and LibreCad are free, Open-Source.
How can I thank you?
Oh! That's nice of you again. Well,… you could either
- Buy Me a Coffee
- Just write a mail using the contact form
- Leave a message on my Facebook page
- And: I'd love the see examples of your work based on my templates. Send me pictures!
Can I contribute?
You really are very kind! Yes, I'm looking for help to translate my site in other languages. The site needs constant updating, because I tend to add a template every now and then.
I'd specifically like to have a translation into Arabic ( or Persian ), Hebrew and Hindi
Because of the quite technical character of my site, it gains a lot in terms of usability when translated into other languages. Please, drop me a line! ✉️
